Caracol Púrpura — Various Producers, Santiago Atitlán Mixes, Oaxaca
Sierra Norte · 1,650m · Criollo-Geisha · Natural · Medium Dark
Some of the most interesting coffees in the world come from places with no single name to attach to them.
Santiago Atitlán Mixes sits in Oaxaca's Sierra Norte, where a handful of independent small farmers tend plots of two of the most compelling varieties in coffee — native Criollo and the celebrated Geisha — side by side. No cooperative structure, no unified brand. Just growers working their own land at altitude, whose harvests Caracol Púrpura has brought together into something worth paying attention to.
The natural process does what it does best here: the cherries dry whole, and the result carries all that fruit-forward intensity. With Criollo's earthy backbone and Geisha's characteristic floral lift, you get a cup that moves — dried stone fruit and jasmine up front, a syrupy sweetness through the middle, and a finish that's longer and more complex than a medium dark roast might lead you to expect. The Sierra Norte altitude keeps it clean despite the natural process, preventing the muddiness that lower-grown naturals can fall into.
This is a blend of place and people rather than a single farm story. That makes it rarer, not less.
